Working with GEM - Learning the terms
GEM UI lets operators quickly get users up and running in VR experiences while focusing on throughput. Before getting started, it's reccommended to learn the commonly used terms.
NOTE:
Some of these terms and concepts may be subject to change during the development process.
Teams¶
Teams: A team refers to one person or group who purchased tickets together and wishes to stay together during the experience.
Group¶
Group: A group is made up of one or more subgroups that will go through the experience together. Each experience has a defined maximum group size to ensure optimal throughput. GEM assembles groups as close to that size as possible by combining available teams from the onboard queue, maximizing throughput for the experience.
Onboarding terms¶
Once users are in the onboarding section, they will be in one of three states before the experience begins.
Queue: During this first phase, users wait to start the experience after the operator scans their tickets.
Suitup: At this point, users put on their headsets and ensure they are properly fitted.
Onboard: The Onboard state is the last phase. This is when users are ready to start the experience. Users wait for the first zone to open during this period before entering.
Create User: Operators can allow someone without a ticket, such as a VIP, demo guest, or docent—to experience the show. In these cases, the operator can manually "Create user," which will grant access to that individual.
Merge Teams can be manually merged with other teams to form a group.
Indication Lights:¶
Red/Green Light: When someone is ready, their status will appear green. However, they won't turn red simply for being unready. They will turn red if they take too long to get ready. GEM allows a certain amount of time for individuals and groups to adjust their headsets and get into position. If this process takes longer than expected, the individual or group will turn red. The goal is for operators to see very few red dots on the dashboard, with those visible indicating individuals or groups that may need assistance. There are exceptions, like loss of communication with a headset, which will immediately trigger a red status, but these instances are expected to be rare.
In Experience Terms¶
Manual & Auto Mode Manual and Auto mode give operators the option to continue to let GEM board groups automatically. Operators can slow it down or pause it by selecting the Manual mode and manually starting the experience when ready.
Deboard: Since experiences that start are usually for a group, pausing and waiting for one person is difficult. Occasionally, a user might need a break to use the restroom or get water. Once a user is in the experience, the only way to handle those cases would be to deboard the user. Once deboarded, the user is removed from the experience and returned to the queue to start over.
Leave: Similar to deboard, the Leave option handles similar situations for the user or group but removes them from the queue and users will be required to be scanned in to be placed back in the queue.
Device Swap: This allows operators to switch out a user's device during an experience to prepare for circumstances where a device could run out of battery or technical issues arise.
Device List¶
Unassigned: Devices listed in this category are available devices, unassigned, and ready to be assigned to the next guest.
Onboard: Devices listed in this category are assigned to users who are currently in the onboarding state.
In Experience: Devices listed in this category are assigned to users currently in the experience.
Prep: Devices listed in this category are devices that have previously completed an experience and need to be prepped for the next user. This state means the device would be cleaned, the batteries checked, etc.
Post Experience: Devices will show up in this state after it has completed an experience. This state tells operators the device has just finished an experience and can be checked, cleaned, etc for the next experience when ready.
